AED Reimbursement Program for Ontario Construction Projects

Ontario construction sites are preparing for a major safety update as Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs)become mandatory on many projects under O. Reg. 157/25. While the new regulation introduces additional responsibilities for constructors, Ontario has also created a reimbursement program to help reduce the financial impact of AED compliance.

To support safer job sites, the Ontario Ministry of Labour has approved an AED reimbursement initiative for qualifying construction projects. This program is intended to help offset the cost of purchasing Health Canada–licensed AEDs that will be required on many Ontario construction sites starting January 1, 2026.

How the AED Reimbursement Program Works

The reimbursement program acknowledges that AEDs are a proven life-saving tool and that cost should not prevent employers from improving emergency preparedness. By reimbursing eligible AED purchases made within a defined timeframe, Ontario is encouraging constructors to adopt AEDs early and integrate them into their site safety plans.

🗓 Applications are expected to open January 1
🛒 Eligible AED purchase window: July 1, 2025 – June 30, 2027

Who May Be Eligible

Based on current guidance, a construction project may qualify if all of the following conditions are met:

  • You are the constructor under the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA)

  • The project is expected to last three months or longer

  • 20 or more workers are regularly employed

  • A trained first aid worker is present whenever work is underway

  • The AED is licensed as a medical device by Health Canada

  • Only one AED reimbursement is claimed per project

Because reimbursement is limited to one AED per project, selecting a compliant, construction-appropriate AEDfrom the start is critical.
