Ontario Construction Sites AED Inspections, Signage, and Training

What You Need To Know

Under O. Reg. 157/25, AED compliance extends far beyond the initial purchase of a device. Ontario construction projects must meet ongoing requirements related to storage, signage, inspections, and worker training, all of which may be reviewed during a Ministry of Labour inspection.

AEDs must be stored as a complete and functional kit, including pads, batteries, and accessories. The device must be clearly visible, unobstructed, and protected from environmental damage such as dust, moisture, and extreme temperatures. Improper storage can compromise AED performance and result in non-compliance.

Signage is a mandatory component of AED compliance. Required signage must include a heart and lightning bolt symbol and be displayed in English or French to ensure rapid identification during an emergency. On larger or multi-level construction sites, additional directional signage may be necessary to reduce response time.

The regulation also requires quarterly AED inspections, with written records documenting the inspection date, the name of the competent worker performing the inspection, and confirmation that the AED is operational and complete. Missing or incomplete records may result in enforcement action even if the AED has never been used.

Training is equally important. A worker trained in CPR and AED use must be present whenever work is underway. Constructors must ensure trained coverage across all shifts and maintain up-to-date training records.

TrackMyAEDâ„¢ supports compliance by digitizing inspection records, issuing automated reminders, and centralizing documentation so it can be easily accessed during inspections.
